Music consumption around the world has changed profoundly in recent years. In 2010, 84% of the market was the prerogative of physical media sales, in 2019 these dropped to 26% and streaming is worth 63% of the pie . The market leader is Spotify with 248 million monthly users and 113 million subscribers. At a great distance are Apple Music with over 60 million users and Amazon Music with 55 million (the share of paying users is unknown). To take stock of the situation, I took a look at the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) report which interviewed 34,000 people in the 19 most relevant nations for the recording market. 89% of those interviewed use some streaming service to listen to music, 64% use audio streaming services.
The highest value of the latter is recorded in the 16-24 range (83%). Younger India Mobile Number Data people are also those who prefer to download paid music rather than buy CDs or vinyl records. There remains 27% who acquire music illegitimately. Music consumption in Italy Italians spend 16 hours a week listening to music and 57% do so using a streaming service. Among young people aged 16-24 the percentage of streamers rises to 71%. From my data it emerges that the most popular app is Spotify which has 10 million Italian users. But it's not just audio. 61% watch streaming videos and 81% also use YouTube for music. How do you listen to music? 37% continue to use the good old radio (up 29% compared to last year), 22% use the smartphone (but among young people the percentage rises to 44%), 16% the computer.
A minority cites record players/hi-fi 10% and 2% smart speakers (although the most extensive use of the latter is at 16%). Predictably, the preferred moments of consumption are in the car (76%), at home (63%) and on the commute from home to work (43%). The most listened to genres are pop (63%), Italian pop (61%), rock (54%, especially among 25-44 year olds), singer-songwriter (49%). Hip-hop and trap stop at 25%, but are the second genre, after pop, preferred by young people (53%). The purchase of music, in any format, is declared by 26% of those interviewed. The 35-44 age group prefers CDs/DVDs, while younger people choose downloads. It's easy to imagine that there's no turning back from streaming, but the war between platforms is still only just beginning.
